Online digital resources for your classroom

As COVID-19 has sent educational institutions into online education, teachers of all levels – K-12 through university professors – are searching for interesting and engaging content to bring into the classroom. Here’s a list of online resources I’ve compiled that you can integrate into your class on topics from art, culture, science, or technology.

Arts & Culture content

National Theatre in London – will live stream play recordings from April 2 – April 23 on it’s YouTube account. (Updated 3/28/20)

Paris Opera is streaming recordings of its famous operas March 17 – May 3. (Updated 3/28/20)

Metropolitan Museum of Art (The MET). This site also offers a series of Blogs about the MET exhibitions, collections and initiatives. The MetKids section that could provide inspiration for K-12 art and history home lessons. If you are a data science professor, teaching data coding or data visualization, the MET’s Open Access API project has several projects you can integrate into your curricula.

Google Arts & Culture Tours

Illustrators from around the world are offering free art classes across various social media platforms. Here’s a list of class offerings with times.

OpenCulture details the release of 44,000 works at the Art Institute of Chicago. This article provides an excellent guide to the collections available that could help inform assignments. You can access the collection here. This includes written works.

Smithsonian Institute of Natural History online tours.

Free coloring book images from over 100 museums.

Collection of 100,000 images from Paris museums.

Educational resources for teachers from the Royal Shakespeare Company to bring Shakespeare content into the classroom.

(not entirely free) Playbill has a list of Broadway plays and musicals that can be streamed on-demand from a variety of platforms. If you were looking to integrate these into a theatre or english assignments, it could be easy for your students to watch these at home.

300,000 online books from the NY Public Library. Also has over 800,000 digitized items including photographs, historic prints, maps, etc.

Internet Archive launches National Emergency Library of over 1 million books available online. (Updated 3/28/20)

Audible has opened a free library of digital books. Access at . There are several kids stories in here including Wheels on the Bus, Winnie the Pooh, Alice in Wonderland, and classics like Jane Eyre, White Fang, Call of the Wild, Moby Dick, lots of C.S. Lewis…(Updated 3/28/20)

JSTOR has made public access to over 6000 eBooks and 150 journals. They are also working with publishers to open access to 20,000 more books. Here is the reference article. You can access JSTOR here. (Updated 3/28/20)

Gardening & Outdoors

The Hidden World of the National Parks 360 degree tours from Google. Explore parks in Alaska, Hawaii, New Mexico, Utah, and Florida. TechCrunch provides a more detailed overview of the tour experience.

Science and Technology

Kennedy Space Center will be teaching rocketry through livestreaming on Facebook Mon, Wed, Fri 9:30 am for younger kids/1pm for older kids. They will also be supplying activity sheets that parents can use with their kids. (Updated 3/28/20)

NASA‘s entire collections of 140,000+ photos and videos are available online.

Natural History Museum of Utah – offering a free Research Quest classes weekdays Mar 17 – Mar 22 (mountain time) and offers a certificate of completion. Aimed at Middle School children.
